When Experience Doesn’t Prepare You – A Retired Police Officer’s Experience of Probate Support

GJ served in Thames Valley Police for more than 30 years.

He’s dealt with crisis and handled pressure, and he’s supported families through the worst moments of their lives. But when his own mother died suddenly while on holiday, none of that experience made it easier.

“I didn’t have a clue what to do,” he says.

Which is something we hear so often.

Even people who have spent a lifetime navigating difficult situations can feel completely unprepared when the loss is personal.

The Shock After The Shock

The emotional impact came first.

“Police officers are hardened to death, but this was my Mother, and her passing hit me like a train.”

Then came the practical questions.

  • What happens now?
  • Do we need probate?
  • Who contacts HMRC?
  • How much is this going to cost?

Like many families, GJ began researching probate support and quickly found something unsettling, pricing was inconsistent and often unclear.

“The transparency of the cost was so important,” he explains.

It wasn’t just about the fee. It was just about knowing where he stood and having clear expectations.

Fixed Fees. Clear Answers. No Guesswork.

When GJ contacted Laurelo, he noticed the difference immediately compared to other probate providers. From the first call, he felt reassured.

“The girl who answered the phone was lovely, and from that moment on every step was really good.”

He was introduced to Paul, his dedicated probate consultant who he did his own due diligence on.

“I can’t speak highly enough of Paul and his brilliant bedside manner. No question was left unanswered or deemed too silly to ask.”

Which is something Laurelo takes very seriously.

Probate terminology can feel overwhelming. Executors often worry they should “know more” or feel embarrassed asking basic questions.

There are no silly questions when you’re bereaved and having to deal with an estate.

Why Face-To-Face Support Matters

What made the biggest difference for GJ and his sister was clarity.

“Laurelo explained the whole process face-to-face so my sister and I could both understand. I knew nothing about probate.”

Everything was broken down simply. What probate is. What it involves. What timescales look like. What paperwork is required, And crucially:

“The fact you even dealt with HMRC for me was a huge relief.”

For many families, handling HMRC, banks and financial institutions is the most stressful part of estate administration. Knowing it’s being managed properly lifts a significant weight.

A Service You Rarely Get

After 30 years in policing, GJ knows what good service looks like.

His words mean a lot to us:

“The service I received was the sort of service I’d expect, but the sort of service you rarely get.”

And to other retired Officers?

“Laurelo were quick, efficient, and there was always someone there to help. I wouldn’t do it any other way. I was surprised, in a really good way.”
